20 Years in Prison Awaiting Telegram CEO Pavel Durov? The 39-year-old Businessman Got Arrested Yesterday at Paris Airport.
Controverity – Jack Harrison: The 39-year-old Telegram CEO could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted in France.
Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, was arrested early this morning at Le Bourget Airport on the outskirts of Paris and, if convicted, faces up to 20 years in prison.
According to the IANS report, citing various sources, the French government has leveled several charges against Durov, including lack of oversight, failure to cooperate with law enforcement, and providing capabilities such as cryptocurrencies and temporary phone numbers, which the French government believes have turned Telegram, with its 900 million users, into a tool for drug trafficking, child abuse, and fraud.
The 39-year-old founder and CEO of Telegram lives in Dubai but also holds French citizenship. He is an entrepreneur with a net worth of at least $15.5 billion. He left Russia in 2014 after refusing to comply with the Russian government’s demands to block opposing views on the social network VK.
Durov is currently the 120th wealthiest person in the world. In 2022, Forbes magazine named him the wealthiest foreigner in the United Arab Emirates.
In 2018, Russia tried to block the popular messaging app after Telegram refused to cooperate with the country’s security services. The Russian embassy in France is currently taking “immediate action” to clarify the situation.
