In a landmark decision, Penn State’s Board of Trustees has approved a 15-year, $50 million agreement granting naming rights of the field at Beaver Stadium to West Shore Home, a home remodeling company founded by alumnus B.J. Werzyn.

The field will now be known as “West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium,” with the contract extending through the 2039 season.

This substantial contribution is set to play a pivotal role in funding the extensive $700 million renovations planned for Beaver Stadium. The payment structure is designed to be front-loaded, with $10 million disbursed over the next decade and the remaining $40 million over the subsequent five years. Athletic Director Pat Kraft emphasized that this financial strategy is crucial for the timely progression of the stadium’s revitalization efforts.

Dissenting Voices

The decision has not been without controversy. The vote passed with a 22-8 majority, but notable opposition came from trustees including Anthony Lubrano, Jay Paterno (son of the late Coach Joe Paterno), and former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin.

Lubrano criticized the move as a betrayal, suggesting that naming the field after Joe and Sue Paterno could have garnered even greater financial support for the university. McGloin echoed these sentiments, asserting that the decision undermines the legacy of those who have significantly contributed to Penn State’s history.

Future Considerations

Despite the current naming agreement, discussions continue regarding appropriate ways to honor the Paterno legacy. Trustee Naren Gursahaney acknowledged the board’s respect for the Paterno family’s contributions and expressed a commitment to finding meaningful avenues for recognition in the future.

As Penn State embarks on this new chapter, the balance between honoring its storied past and embracing future opportunities remains a focal point of ongoing conversations within the university community.
