CBS Scraps “The Equalizer” Spinoff Despite Recent Backdoor Pilot

CBS has abruptly halted development on “The Equalizer” spinoff just days after airing a backdoor pilot episode starring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz.

Sudden Reversal After Backdoor Pilot

CBS has confirmed to TVLine that the network will not proceed with a spinoff of “The Equalizer,” despite airing a backdoor pilot less than 48 hours prior. The episode, titled “Sins of the Father,” featured Titus Welliver (Bosch) as ex-CIA agent Elijah Reed and Juani Feliz as his daughter Samantha, who enlists Queen Latifah’s Robyn McCall to find her missing father.

Main Series’ Uncertain Future

The original “The Equalizer” now stands as CBS’ last remaining “bubble show” following the cancellation of the Wayans family comedy Poppa’s House. With no renewal announced yet, the Season 5 finale airing Sunday, May 4 at 10/9c may serve as both a season and series finale.

Current Cast and New CBS Projects

The main series stars Queen Latifah alongside Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira, Laya DeLeon Hayes, and Lorraine Toussaint. In other CBS development news, the network has greenlit several new series including:

  • CIA (an FBI offshoot starring Tom Ellis)
  • Crime procedural Einstein (starring Matthew Gray Gubler)
  • Workplace comedy DMV (starring Harriet Dyer)

Additionally, CBS has confirmed it will not move forward with a previously planned spinoff of The Neighborhood.

Related Cancellations

This decision follows other recent CBS cancellations including Poppa’s House and The Neighborhood spinoff, signaling potential shifts in the network’s programming strategy.
