GPT-5 Specs and Details Leaked on GitHub Earlier Than The Introduction of Today.

It appears that GitHub has accidentally revealed the new GPT-5 series of AI models from OpenAI. The story began with a blog post on GitHub that has since been taken down. According to the post, GPT-5 comes in four different versions and brings “significant improvements in reasoning, code quality, and user experience.”

Users on Reddit noticed a newly published blog post on GitHub announcing that GPT-5 was now publicly available through GitHub Models. However, the post was quickly deleted. An archived version of the post reveals that GPT-5 features “more advanced agent-like capabilities” and can “handle complex coding tasks with minimal guidance.”

Four Different Versions of GPT-5

According to the now-deleted information published on GitHub, GPT-5 will come in four different versions:

  • gpt-5: Designed for logical and multi-step reasoning tasks.
  • gpt-5-mini: A lighter version aimed at cost-sensitive use cases.
  • gpt-5-nano: Optimized for speed, ideal for applications requiring low latency.
  • gpt-5-chat: Tailored for advanced, natural, context-aware, and multimodal conversations, especially in enterprise settings.

Previous Rumors and Hints

Last month, reports surfaced suggesting that OpenAI was preparing to launch GPT-5 in early August, with the Mini and Nano versions expected to be available via API. Earlier this week, some OpenAI employees hinted at a “big week” ahead in their posts, and even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dropped subtle clues about GPT-5 over the past weekend.

It now seems almost confirmed that OpenAI is launching GPT-5 today, as the company has scheduled an event titled “LIVE5TREAM” for 10 AM PT (1 PM ET). The announcement of GPT-5 comes in the same week that OpenAI also introduced two open-source models under the GPT-OSS name—one of which is so lightweight it can run locally on a personal computer.
