Massive Fire at Denver Construction Site: What Sparked the Leetsdale Blaze?

Massive Fire at Denver Construction Site Leetsdale Drive, prompting evacuations as investigators search for the cause of the blaze.

Denver, Jan. 3, 2026 — A massive fire ripped through a large apartment building under construction near Leetsdale Drive and South Forest Street in Denver on Friday evening, prompting evacuations, road closures and a major emergency response — but the cause of the blaze remains unknown as investigators continue their work.

Shortly after flames erupted at the unfinished structure — planned to include hundreds of residential units — more than 100 firefighters responded to what Denver officials described as a three-alarm fire that consumed much of the building. Heavy smoke and towering flames were visible for miles, lighting up the skyline and drawing local attention.

Denver Fire Department officials stressed the challenge of battling a fire in an unfinished structure, where the absence of drywall, insulation, sprinklers and internal fire stops allowed flames to spread rapidly throughout the block-long site.

“To fight a fire in a building like this is especially tough,”

said Denver Fire Division Chief Robert Murphy.

“There’s nothing in place yet to contain or slow the fire. It ran freely.”

Authorities ordered evacuations for nearby residents and businesses out of caution, with some locals reporting embers carried by the wind and significant heat radiating from the inferno. The Denver Police Department temporarily shut down Leetsdale Drive in both directions during firefight operations.

As of Saturday morning, there were no confirmed civilian injuries, though one firefighter was reported transported to a local hospital for treatment after being hurt while fighting the blaze, Denver7 reported.

Fire investigators remain on site searching for clues to the ignition source. At this stage, no official determination has been made about what caused the fire, and officials have not ruled out any possibilities — whether accidental or otherwise.

Residents affected by evacuations were advised to stay updated through Denver Fire Department alerts as crews continued monitoring for hot spots and working to fully contain the scene.
