Instagram is introducing AI-powered tools that show users topics shaping their Reels and Explore recommendations, allowing additions or removals to tailor content.
Instagram is rolling out a new personalization feature that gives users more control over what they see in their Reels and Explore feeds by letting them view and edit the topics the algorithm uses to suggest content. The tool, part of an AI-powered recommendation update, shows a list of interest categories and allows users to remove or add topics based on their preferences.

Instagram’s latest update introduces an “interests panel” that uses artificial intelligence to summarize and display the topics influencing a user’s recommended content in Reels and Explore. By tapping the settings icon or interest panel while watching a Reel, users can see which topics are driving their recommendations and adjust them by adding or removing categories. This allows people to shape their own content experience rather than relying solely on Instagram’s automated suggestions.
When users access the interests panel, Instagram shows a list of topic tags derived from their past engagement and interactions. Users can press and hold on any topic they no longer want to see and remove it from the list. Alternatively, they can add custom topics they want to see more of in their recommendations, helping tailor the Reels and Explore feeds more closely to their preferences.
The new feature reflects Instagram’s move toward greater transparency and user agency over algorithmic recommendations. By opening up the “why” behind suggested content and letting users curate topics influencing what they see, Instagram aims to reduce irrelevant or unwanted posts and improve overall personalization. The update also aligns with broader trends in social media toward giving users control over algorithmic feeds.
